Tummy Tuck

Many people who have experienced dramatic weight loss, pregnancy, or abdominal surgery can be left with excess skin and fat in the abdominal area. To improve the appearance of this area, many patients undergo a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, procedure. This surgery removes excess skin and fat from the area to help create a more toned midsection. William Franckle, MD, FACS has extensive experience performing tummy tuck procedures, and he may be able to help you achieve your desired results.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is a type of cosmetic surgery performed by plastic surgeons to help patients improve the appearance of their midsections or to repair a weak lower abdominal wall. There are two different types of tummy tucks: the full tummy tuck and the mini tummy tuck. The standard full tummy tuck, known as abdominoplasty, is ideal for people who need to tighten the entire abdominal area. It involves removing excess tissue and tightening the area from the chest down to the waistline. Many women opt for a full tummy tuck after pregnancy to tighten connective tissue within the abdomen.

A mini tummy tuck, on the other hand, addresses excess fat and skin in the lower abdomen only. During this version of the procedure, Dr. Franckle will remove small pockets of excess fat and skin that are difficult to get rid of through traditional diet and exercise. It requires a smaller incision than a full abdominoplasty, and it is usually performed in addition to liposuction to help smooth the lower abdomen area. A good option for people who are at or near their desired weight but still have some excess skin and fat, this procedure has a shorter recovery time because the abdominal wall muscles are not tightened.

Is Abdominoplasty Right for You?

Even if you regularly work out, you may still have some skin around your abdomen that isn’t as tight as it used to be. If you have gone through periods of weight gain, including pregnancy, the stomach muscles under the skin have likely expanded and separated. The skin loses its elasticity as it stretches, creating stretch marks and loose skin. When you lose excess weight rapidly, the skin and muscles continue to be stretched, preventing you from achieving a flat and slim look. If this is the case, abdominoplasty may help correct the problem.

Ideal candidates for the surgery should be non-smokers who are at or near their desired weight, with a body mass index (BMI) less than 30. The best candidates are also in generally good health, with no severe chronic conditions and no significant scar tissue from previous abdominal surgeries. If you still have a significant amount of weight to lose or are considering getting pregnant in the future, you should wait until after that time to undergo the procedure.

Combining a Tummy Tuck With Other Procedures

Many patients choose to undergo abdominoplasty in conjunction with other body contouring procedures to help reduce the downtime associated with recovery. One popular option is liposuction to help remove stubborn fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise alone. Another option is to combine a tummy tuck with breast surgery, such as breast augmentation or breast lift. Many women choose to combine all three procedures after they are finished having children in an effort to achieve a shape similar to what they had before pregnancy, known as a mommy makeover.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your first appointment will be a consultation with Dr. Franckle, during which you’ll discuss your medical history, goals, and concerns. Based on this information, Dr. Franckle will either recommend a full abdominoplasty or mini tummy tuck, or he will recommend you take additional steps to become a better candidate for surgery. To help you have realistic expectations for the outcome of your procedure, Dr. Franckle will use state-of-the-art 3-D imaging technology to show you renderings of possible results. Should you choose to move forward, he will provide you with instructions to prepare for your upcoming surgery.

Dr. Franckle will provide specific instructions regarding the proper care regimen following your surgery. This will include how to care for the surgical site and drains, necessary medications to apply or take orally for healing and information on reducing chances of infection, specific concerns to keep your eye on for the surgical site or general health, and a timetable for when you should follow up with Dr. Franckle.

As with any surgery, you may have questions about when you can get back to your normal lifestyle and activities. It may not seem apparent beforehand, but you should ask any potential questions during your consultation so that you don’t take part in an activity that could potentially interfere with recovery. Dr. Franckle can provide more specific information about the date of removal for bandages, dressings and stitches, when you can wear makeup, resume exercise, or visit your stylist for cut and color. Pending the extent of the procedure or combination of procedures, sutures are usually removed within 14 days of surgery. Bruising and swelling will normally become less noticeable in 10 to 20 days. Overall, the final result of a tummy tuck procedure is evident in 4 to 6 weeks or sooner, with continued improvement for several months.

There are also a variety of steps you can take to ensure your results are maintained so you can enjoy your procedure to its fullest. Regular application of sunscreen and a healthy lifestyle can help you keep the rejuvenated, youthful appearance following your surgery. For optimal results, be sure to follow Dr. Franckle’s instructions to the fullest. Your surgeon will recommend that you avoid excessive force, abrasion, or motion during the healing process. For instance, you will want to avoid getting dressed in a fashion that requires you to pull shirts over your head.

How to Prepare

The first step to preparing for a tummy tuck is to decide which kind of procedure is right for you. You may decide to have a full tummy tuck, which removes excess tissue and tightens from the entire abdominal area, or a mini tummy tuck, which only targets excess fat and skin in the lower abdomen.

In the months leading up to your procedure, it’s important to start eating a healthy diet, drinking more water, and staying physically active. If you smoke or drink alcohol, you should also start the process of quitting, as these lifestyle factors can affect the way your body heals and fights off infection following a tummy tuck procedure.

As the date of your surgery approaches, you should begin scheduling consultations with Dr. Franckle and undergo all necessary medical evaluations and medication adjustments. In the last few weeks before your procedure, you will need to make arrangements for post-op transportation, childcare, time off of work, and supervision during your recovery. You will also need to stock up on recovery supplies, including comfortable clothing, bedding, ice packs, medications, and plenty of water and nutritious meals.

It can be found in either one breast or both, and it can sometimes cause a noticeable imbalance in the size of the breasts. Though it is often a painless condition, men who suffer from it may experience feelings of embarrassment or shyness.

❗️FALSE❗️

Fact: A facelift can reposition tissue and address the neck area in ways fillers cannot. However, fillers are excellent for adding lost facial volume and giving a boost to your skin. They’re a great short-term, nonsurgical way to fight the signs of aging. If you’re unsure about committing to a facelift, give facial fillers a try.
