1. How Does Liposuction Work?

A liposuction procedure will remove excess fat deposits from the body. After anesthesia is administered (whether it be general or local anesthesia), incisions are made and a thin hollow tube (or cannula) is used to loosen the fat cells from the surrounding tissue. The dislodged fat is then suctioned out of the body.

In the current, technologically advanced field of plastic surgery, doctors and patients are blessed with many options for a liposuction procedure. Laser liposuction, water-assisted liposuction (body-jet) and traditional liposuction are among the most popular. The method of liposuction used in a surgery is based on the patient’s body type, health and areas they wish to have treated. All of this will be decided during your consultation with Dr. Franckle.

2. Does Liposuction Work Best on Certain Body Types?

This procedure works best on men and women who are close to their ideal, healthy body weight.  Excess weight has the potential to obstruct a healthy healing process. An ideal liposuction candidate is within 30% of their ideal weight and have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone.

3. Will Liposuction Help Me Lose Weight?

Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity nor a treatment designed to help a patient lose weight. Liposuction is meant to remove stubborn pockets of fat that are not responding to diet and exercise. Patients who have always struggled to reduce fat in certain areas of the body (tummy, thighs, arms) find liposuction very helpful when used in conjunction with their healthy lifestyle.

4. What is Liposuction Recovery Like?

The after care for liposuction may involve wearing a tube to drain the body of excess fluid accumulating at the incision sites. Fluid is a liposuction recovery regularity and is typically not cause for alarm. Medical compression garments are recommended and should be worn to compress the area and aid in healing. These are usually worn for a few weeks post procedure. It is common for patients to feel pain after the anesthesia wears off and oral medications may be prescribed to help with the discomfort. Swelling following the procedure is to be expected and will subside in the months post operative. The compression garment recommended should be worn 24 hours a day to help control swelling and compress the skin to your new body shape.

5. How Do I Choose my Liposuction Surgeon?

One of the most important decisions for you to make before a liposuction procedure is choosing a surgeon. First and foremost, research doctors in your area that are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. No exceptions! That is the only way to ensure a safe procedure. Visit the doctor’s website and their before and after photo gallery. When you find a doctor you like, visit the office for a consultation. You want to be comfortable with the doctor as well as the staff at the practice.
