In the News: Men and Plastic Surgery

Anyone and everyone is talking about the newest trend in the plastic surgery industry; the growing popularity of men and plastic surgery.  According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery the fastest growing cosmetic procedures among men (in percentages) from 2009 to 2010 are as follows:

1. Facelift: 14% Increase

2. Ear Surgery (Otoplasty): 11% Increase

3. Soft Tissue Fillers: 10% Increase

4. Botox: 9% Increase

5. Liposuction: 7% Increase

1.1 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed on men in 2010; that’s 31,000 eyelid surgeries, 165,000 laser hair removal treatments, 90,000 chemical peels and 24,000 liposuction procedures (just to name a few).

Men being interviewed about this topic give the job market as one of their top reasons for turning to cosmetic procedures. Just as women have expressed concern in the past having to compete with younger women, men are facing the same
predicament.  Men re-entering the workplace after being laid off or simply looking to change jobs, are competing with younger, more aggressive men and they want to level the playing field.

Besides the job market, men simply just want to look younger. Joe Marek, in an interview with ABC News, doesn’t feel mid-life so why should he look it?

“I’m more active than most people my age. I don’t feel old, I feel good, but people were coming up to me and saying, ‘You look tired. You look run down.’ I got tired of it,”

The plastic surgery industry was hit hard by the recession, but now, thanks in part to men of the baby boomer generation, the market seems to be rebounding.
